The Greek Consulate in Istanbul has organized a series of lectures entitled “Remembering the Ottoman Past in the Eastern Mediterranean,” in collaboration with the National Hellenic Research Institute (Ottoman Studies Programme) and the Orient-Institut in Istanbul. The first lecture is scheduled to take place on Monday, October 26 at Sismanoglio Megaro.
This series of lectures will be held during the October 2015 – May 2016 academic year, aiming to shed light on various aspects of the communal past of today’s residents of the Eastern Mediterannean region. They will focus on a large number of sources that go beyond the standard rules of established history-writing, taking into account personal and official textual sources, as well as visual and artistic forms of expression.
The speakers who will participate on the lecture of October 26 are: Sinan Kuneralp, “Diaries, Memoirs and Correspondence of Ottoman Diplomats of Greek Ethnicity in the Tanzimat and post-Tanzimat periods” and Maria-Christina Chatziioannou, “Testimonies for the Ottoman Empire: The case of Greek trade networks in the 19th century.” Furthermore, the academic coordinators are Evangelia Balta & Richard Wittmann.
The series of lectures are dedicated to the memory of Vangelis Kechriotis.
